Just need some highway advice?

A one-off meeting, site visit or review can help you understand what is possible before committing to a full design. Advice starts from one hour; site visits are available in Kent.

A landmark in UK highway design

A UK first.
From idea to delivery.

At Running Horse Roundabout in Maidstone, I proposed, designed, secured approval for and delivered the UK’s first turbo roundabout of its type, completed in May 2024. I also supervised construction, working closely with the contractor and stakeholders to take the scheme from the initial idea into use.

My work spans roundabouts, signalised junctions, public realm, bus infrastructure, cycle routes and development access. I take responsibility for the design and the decisions needed to bring it into use.

Software in my practice

The tools behind the design.

I use specialist design software and traffic data to test options, resolve details and support sound engineering decisions.

Vehicle tracking, signs, lines & supports

AutoTURN Pro

I use AutoTURN Pro to check how vehicles move through a proposed layout, including delivery vehicles, buses and emergency vehicles. Swept path analysis helps me test access, turning space and clearances, and resolve problems before construction.

TrafxPLAN Sign & TrafxPLAN Post

I use TrafxPLAN Sign to design traffic signs to the relevant UK regulations and guidance. TrafxPLAN Post supports the design of sign posts and foundations, so the sign face and its supporting structure are considered together. The software supports the checks needed for a compliant, buildable design.

TrafxPLAN Lines

I use TrafxPLAN Lines to design road markings to the relevant UK regulations and guidance. Lane lines, arrows, hatching and road studs are laid out as part of the design rather than drawn individually, so amendments can be made quickly and accurately, whilst ensuring consistency as the layout develops. This is essential on any scheme, but for something as innovative as a turbo roundabout, it is even more critical to ensure drivers know exactly how to use the junction.

Traffic data, without the wait

I use Compass IoT to provide speed, traffic volume and queue data from connected vehicles across the UK road network.

For development access design, that includes mean and 85th percentile speeds, volumes and queue lengths for a site without putting an ATC on the road, and historic data available straight away rather than waiting for a survey window.

Compass speeds have been validated against UK local authority counters, and the data is used by councils and consultants across the UK, Europe, Australia and North America.

Experience inside a highway authority

The engineer
behind the work.

I spent most of my career at Kent County Council, latterly leading a team of five engineers and Project Managers.

Alongside designing and delivering schemes, I reviewed externally submitted highway designs. I understand how councils assess another designer’s work, what they expect to see and where technical questions arise.
